Our Story

Fifty years of not cutting corners.

Since 1974, Shantha Technical Institute has taught Typewriting and Shorthand in Wellington under the same government-approved curriculum and fee structure the whole time, with English and Tamil taught properly, not as an afterthought.

That's the story: one standard, kept for five decades.

Our Approach

Precision is a habit, not a talent.

Every student starts at the same place — correct finger placement, steady rhythm, and enough repetition that speed becomes automatic rather than effortful. There are no shortcuts in the curriculum, because there are none in the exams either.

What we teach is the same discipline that has carried students through Junior and Senior grade exams, government recruitment tests, and, eventually, into steady work — one deliberate keystroke at a time.

Why Now

Still a skill worth having, in a digital world.

Typewriting and Shorthand aren't taught here as a relic of an older office. The discipline underneath them — accuracy under time pressure, sustained focus, structured practice — carries directly into computer-based office work. It isn't a substitute for computer literacy. It's the foundation most computer literacy is built on.

And it's still formally recognised, not just informally useful: many government and court recruitment exams list a certified typing or shorthand speed as an eligibility requirement in its own right. See where that leads.
